Dermaplane FAQs

What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a form of physical exfoliation. (Did you happen to read the blog that explains the benefits of chemical and physical exfoliation? If not, go read it here.) When you request a dermaplane upgrade or stand alone treatment, your service provider will gently “shave” your facial skin with a medical grade scalpel using very light feathering strokes. This service will remove both dead skin cells and vellus hair, more commonly referred to as “peach fuzz”.
What is the difference between dermaplaning and microdermabrasion?
Both treatments are forms of physical exfoliation, however dermaplaning removes both dead skin cells and peach fuzz while microdermabrasion just removes dead skin cells. Also, dermaplaing does a more thorough job of removing dead skin cells.
What are the benefits of dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning has quite a few benefits for such a simple and generally inexpensive procedure.
Anit-aging: dermaplaning helps eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, acne scarring, broken capillaries, and uneven complexion. Your skin will be smoother, clearer, and brighter.
Evens skin tone: removing the layer of dry, dead skin cells, which can cause clogged pores and a dull looking complexion, really brightens up your face and evens out your skin tone.
Hair removal: your face will be completely smooth, hairless, and less prone to the dirt and oil build-up caused by fine hair (which in turn will lead to a clearer complexion).
Immediate and long lasting benefits: you will notice bright new skin right away and for several weeks after your treatment. The removal of dead skin cells encourages cell regeneration which also helps make your skin more plump and youthful.
Better product penetration: because you are removing both dead skin cells and vellus hair, skincare products are more easily absorbed and can do their job better. Your makeup application will also be smoother and easier!
Is Dermaplaning safe?
Dermaplaning is very safe when you receive your treatment from a trained and licensed professional. It carries no more risk than shaving your legs. And there is no downtime after the procedure. Just remember to wear an SPF (which you should be doing daily anyway!) because those newly revealed skin cells are definitely more sensitive to the sun’s rays.
Will Dermaplaning hurt or cause cuts?
Unlike other forms of hair removal like waxing or threading, dermaplaning is completely pain free. There is very little risk of any cuts (when you go to a trained professional) because of the small light strokes used.
Who is a good candidate for dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is good for just about everyone. It is especially beneficial for those with mature, dry skin. It is safe for pregnant or nursing moms and is a great alternative to chemical peels which are a no-no during this time. Your esthetician will let you know if you fall into the small category of people who are not good candidates for this treatment and suggest alternatives.
Will dermaplaning cause my hair to grow back thicker or darker?
Your hair will not grow back any differently after dermaplaning. The texture and color will remain the same.
How long does dermaplaning take and how long do the results last?
A Dermaplane Standard treatment at Amelia Gray lasts anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes and includes calming and moisturizing products. You can also add the dermaplane service as an upgrade onto the Uptown or Downtown Facials or many of our other specialty facials for a truly customized glow. . The results of dermaplane last about a month. In Exfoliation 101 we talked about the process of skin cell renewal and how long it takes. Because of the 21-28 day cell regeneration process, we recommend a monthly dermaplane treatment to keep your skin looking its best.
