Dry, Winter Hair Tips!

Tarrah Bouts

Are you a dry shampoo junkie? Or perhaps you just battle with dry hair regularly?! During the winter months, the colder temps and the drier air can wreak havoc on our hair, just like it can with our skin (read some helpful skin tips here) The Stylists of #teamAG have come up with a few helpful tips and tricks to get you through this harsh, cold weather, looking “salon styled” on the daily!

Using a dry shampoo (like the Refresh & Go from Pureology) is a life saver for so many of us! Whether just saving time in the morning, refreshing our hair post workout, or buying time between washes to help save our hair from doing a little “too much” in this drier climate, we can all agree that it is a miracle product! But are you balancing the care you give the ends of your beloved strands, with the same love you have for dry shampoo at the roots?

This is where a thermal protectant (our fave is also the Pureology Color Fanatic Spray!) is perfect for post wash, pre blowdry, and helps strengthen and care for your hair between washing when dry shampoo is your BFF! Just a few spritzes still saves you time, while saving your ends from breakage!

Since you are saving time by not washing, blowdrying, and heat styling daily, spend only 3-5 minutes more and invest in a hair mask once a week! One of our senior stylists, Katelin, prefers the Hydrate Soft mask for her guests (and they all talk about how much they love it during their hair reservation and how easy it is to use at home!)

Our long time stylist at AG, Maddy, has some great insight on this Winter Time hair topic:

“As the scalp gets oily the ends tend to dry out from hair spray, brushing or even just putting your hair up. To me, using hair oil/serum is just as important as dry shampoo! For static, I always carry a dryer sheet in my coat pocket if it’s really bad just swipe it on your hair and it’ll take care of it. Keeping your hair extra hydrated will also help with static. I see a lot of dry scalp people mistake for dandruff in the winter, so it’s important to wash your hair less and let your scalp absorb your natural oils. Using a humidifier in the winter, or if the air is dry in your home year round will also help keep your hair from feeling brittle/dry. I sleep with mine on every night! Hot shower water is always a no! Instead, rinse in luke warm water, and if you want a hot shower, clip your hair up and use a shower cap to protect it from the hot steam! Blowouts are fine year round, considering you can customize your experience to your hair needs!”

Mind. Blown. Thanks for all of that info, Maddy! A couple of her favorite products are:

Pureology shine bright taming serum (for thicker hair types! It’s a cream to oil)

Redken shine flash for a quick and light weight hydration or static control

What are our takeaways? Turn down the hot water; run the humidifier; hydrate with a heat protectant and hair mask; and use the right products for your hair! Did you know that our stylists offer consultations on hair products? Ask to schedule some time with them, find them on social media, or schedule that blowout and ask for some help in that session!
